INTERVIEW: Lucky Star Gallery

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Harriette & Missy Allison

I’ve been a fan of Lucky Star Gallery for a while now, their website is amazing, chock full of vintage Cowgirl goods that you’ll love. What really makes this mother-daughter team {Harriette & Missy Allison} so special is their authenticity and commitment to keeping the spirit of individuality, American pride and Wild West Fever ALIVE AND KICKIN’!! Here’s a little more about this dynamic duo…

CACTUS: Where is The Lucky Star Gallery located?

The Lucky Star Gallery is a web-based store. Our 3000 sq ft warehouse is located in Reno, NV and is chock full of our American antiques, western collectibles and our fabrication shop for our line of leather accessories/furnishings. We are open to the public by appointment, we work with decorators/designers and do prop rental, as well.

 The Lucky Star Gallery

CACTUS: Have you always lived in Reno?

No. We (my mom and I) are from Bishop, CA. We are from a large Italian family base, there in the Owens Valley – cattle ranchers and cowboys! My mom has been in Reno for going on 20 years. I came to be near her after I graduated college in southern California in 1996, I left for San Francisco in 1998, moved to Hawaii in 2000, and have now been here in Reno again for almost 10 years. Reno is a convenient location for us, we are only 4 hours from our hometown and extended family.

Lucky Star Gallery

CACTUS:  How does living in that region affect your style?

Four solid seasons makes for an extensive wardrobe! I think that our style has less to do with the region we live in and more to do with our passion for the west and for the past. We are inspired by vintage lifestyle, quality of craft and COLOR!

Lucky Star Gallery

CACTUS: You own Lucky Star Gallery with your mom ~ how did you guys come upon the decision to open a business together?

My mom has always dabbled in antiques, as a collector. Following the death of my step-dad in 1996, she took a buying trip with some friends who were antique dealers. By the end of the trip my mom was officially on her way into the business. In 2001 I joined her on a cross-country buying trip and got hooked, myself. It was on that road trip that we conceptualized The Lucky Star Gallery.

CACTUS: What are the best and worst parts of working with your mom?

My mom and I enjoy lots of the same things, appreciate each others tastes and ideas, and have a good time! We created this business together and share a common vision for success… the challenges that come are sometimes difficult to navigate, our emotional attachment to the business and to each other makes it feel like we have more at stake.

Lucky Star Gallery

CACTUS: What is the mission of Lucky Star Gallery?

The Lucky Star Gallery began as an American antiques business, and although we have diversified with our design work, our mission has stayed the same. We are dedicated to an active process of restore, reuse & recycle by utilizing American antiques. We believe in the handmade quality of products from yesterday, and in buying American made.

This philosophy continues through my mom’s designs. Her furniture designs all start with vintage pieces, rebuilt and restored she gives new life to those pieces and creates museum quality art furniture. Her handbag, wallet, belt & guitar strap lines all began as ways to use excess leather from her furniture making.

Garage Sale of America

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

With all of the time I’ve been spending with the Junk Mafia lately, seems like conversation keeps coming back to this book, Garage Sale Americaby Bruce Littlefield. It is a great book… the author takes readers through yard sales, barn sales & garage sales cross America. He shows us treasures & collections, and how to put it all together in his charming home.

Garage Sale America

But my very favorite part of the book is in the back where Littlefield gives definitions to some of the must-know terms for all dedicated JUNKERS/Garage Sale JUNKIES… here are just a few to get you in the mood. Just a few more weeks and garage sale season will be heating up again. Thank goodness.

INSPIRATION: ‘Farm-Fresh’ Living Room

Monday, January 18th, 2010

I was going through old magazines yesterday and found this image from an old Country Home Magazine {lordy I miss that magazine!!}

This space is clearly on the country side, hence the “Farm-Fresh” theme… but it’s very cozy and warm looking, and fits perfectly with the twenty-ten trend towards Grandma Chic. Want to recreate this look in your own house??

Farm Fresh Living Room
{Country Home Magazine, March/April 2009, Photographer Helen Norman}

First things first, lets talk about the STRAW. Someone told me once that a true, working cowgirl would rather spend her money on her animals first, then her boots, then a coffee table. No matter what your priorities, this idea has TWO BRILLIANT QUALITIES ~ it’s GREEN & it’s FREE. According to Country Home they used vinyl blanket storage containers {available HERE}, filled them with straw, then added a plywood base & casters. I LOVE THIS!!! {NOTE from CH: if the straw settles simply unzip the containers & add more straw ~ easy~peezy}

Here are a few more links to getting this ‘Farm Fresh’ look in your own home!!

JIMT Idea: Bottle Caps

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

One Christmas when I was a student at Texas A&M I was trying to figure out what to give my friends as gifts.  Being a poor college student I had to come up with something inexpensive so I ventured upon a DIY project that involved materials I had access to, while also being appropriate for my comprades.  The result was a picture frame with beer bottle caps glued to the frame.  This is a true story… I can remember hanging out at a little burger & beer place during the entire Christmas break eating fries, drinking cold ones, listening to the juke box & collecting bottle caps.  Ahhh, the good ol’ days.

{NOTE: my bottle cap frames weren’t nearly this cool!!}

 Turns out I was onto something because now Bottle Cap art has taken on a life of it’s own.  Each little bottle cap {ESPECIALLY the old ones!!} are like teeny-tiny graphic masterpieces ~ collections of the marketing history of our country.  By rescuing the bottle caps from a land fill, molding them into something new, and working with their colors and designs you are breathing new life into something could have been discarded and left for nothing.

I’ve included a few examples of what the ingenious types in the world of UPCYCLED ART are creating with bottle caps.

{Upcycling is “The practice of taking something that is disposable and transforming it into something of greater use and value” From the book Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things by William McDonough and Michael Braungart.}

Are you a CRAFTY CHICA??

Monday, December 28th, 2009

I’m not known for my crafting skills and I am at a point in my life that I’m ok with that…. after all there are so many people that are really good at crafting.  Take the obvious Martha Stewart for example, and every person who sells something on Etsy, and of course the Crafty Chica.

For those of you who aren’t familiar {once again, I’m pretty sure I was the last to find her}, the Crafty Chica is Kathy Cano-Murliio, an artist, author, Latino-inspired, glitter obsessed “crafter” who is inspiring people everywhere to go outside of their comfort zone and create something new and different and totally liberating.

If I was a crafter I’m pretty sure I’d be doin’ it Crafty Chica style.  Check her website HERE… and her awesome selection of goods BELOW.

The Crafty Chica even has her own line of Craft supplies… I’m thinking that a couple of books & some supplies, put together in a hip hot pink or orange basket, would make a great gift for your girls!!

Christmas Countdown {24 days to go} ~ Lonesome Dove

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

I know I’ve put this out there before but let me just say again… some of my favorite memories are from the days I spent with my Dad watching Lonesome Dove marathons.  They were perfection… we would eat oreos, drink soda & watch Robert Duvall & Tommy Lee Jones from sun up to sun down.  Folks, life doesn’t get much better than that…

With that I offer another Christmas idea… start your own Lonesome Dove Marathon tradition… or any other movie series you LOVE. It’s a great way for a family to spend time together & BOND.

Lonesome Dove ~ the original movie

Lonesome Dove Picture Book

Lonesome Dove 10 DVD Set

popcorn

…you’ve got to have popcorn for a movie marathon!!  Add the movies & the book, along with the popcorn… maybe some sodas & mini salt containers to a basket & you’ll have this gift all tied up.
