We’ve had serious Southwest fever ever since we visited New Mexico back in February {we recommend the Chocolate Turtle Bed & Breakfast in Corrales, NM just outside of Albuquerque, NM}. Three days of hiking through petroglyphs, canyons, and mesas provided inspiration for a whole new body of work by Dolan and, for me, an appreciation for new colors and patterns I’d never considered in my wardrobe or home. Check out more pictures from our trip below!!  It was fate that Cactus Creek Daily then profiled the Spanish Colonial home of Diane Keaton days after our return. I was hooked! Stacy Downs from the KC Star called a few weeks ago to see if we would be interested in being a part of this Sofa Story.  Um, yes… of course we are interested.  They picked six designers in Kansas City to decorate a white sofa with pillows ~ just pillows ~ I was thrilled to be included.  My only question was what style were they looking for??  We always describe Cactus Creek {the store and the website} as Rustic * Western * Vintage.  So I wanted to deliver… Rustic, Western or Vintage???  Stacy said “just your style, whatever you would do in your store”. 

Then my husband asked me… “if you could do any pillows what would they be??”  Well, I had just returned from Texas and was about to head to Des Moines for Junk Jubilee.  I had no time, and I had spent a wad of money, so I also had no money.  “In a dream world I would have cowhide pillows, turkish rug pillows, and {even though I’d never seen any in person} pillows made from old quilts.  That would be my dream pillows… if I had time. or money.”

I knew I’d come up with something, ’cause I can always come up with something, and then that weekend at Junk Jubilee I’ll be darned if I didn’t find the PERFECT crazy quilt pillows.  They are gorgeous… made from rugged old quilts that had been filled with holes, but the gal who rescued them couldn’t bear to throw them away.  So she cut them up and gave them a beautiful new life… 

Each pillow is hand cut and sewn, they are embellished with embroidery, vintage buttons and fanciful trims.  Each crazy quilt pillow is one-0f-a-kind and full of character… and they are all for sale at the Cactus Creek STORE.  Want one??  all you have to do is give us a shout… 816.386.4013.

Debi has recently premiered a new look on her website, YayaChique.com. The site is a compilation of Debi’s projects ~ a place where you can see pictures of her newest creations from debi lynn designs, read her Treasures Blog about the new Yaya Chique store opening soon, and also find showcased other up and coming designers that have that unique look “Mae West meets Stevie Nicks”.

Yaya Chique is first and foremost the home of debi lynn designs. Boutique owners who are interested in carrying the line can contact Debi directly for one-of-a-kinds and the limited editions that are found at market. Her reproduction work can be found at the Dallas and Atlanta markets with Donna at Virgins, Saints & Sinners.

The original Yaya Chique Store in Houston, Texas closed last spring so that Debi could move to a space closer to home and her core clientele. The store is re-opening soon and Debi is keeping her Treasures Blog readers updated daily with all it takes to open a retail store… The blog will showcase new products of both Debi’s work and other designers at least once a week.  Debi’s posts are fun to read and help you get into the heart and soul of Yaya Chique!!

With her busy schedule, unique spin on style, and infectious laugh, Debi and Yaya Chique are a brand that tugs on the heart strings and makes me want to be a part of the adventure every step of the way!!

Sugar Molds are available at MexicoImports.com!!

The story about SUGAR MOLDS goes like this… back in the days of covered wagons ~ and still in remote parts of Mexico ~ people kept their sugar packed tightly in a cone shape.  They would store the cones of sugar in the holes of a long piece of wood {the wood being the SUGAR MOLD} and take the cones out when they wanted some sugar.  After scraping off what they needed they would put the sugar cones back into the mold to store it from ants & other critters.  At least that’s how the story goes if we’re selling you a SUGAR MOLD at Cactus Creek.

You can also use SUGAR MOLDS for storing pens, pencils or paint brushes ~ use them as a candle holder, or for flowers ~ put small pots in the holes and grow herbs ~ or use them to store silverware or even plastic-ware at your next BBQ. The options are limitless.

With our society’s trend of turning abandoned urban buildings into residential lofts and commercial properties, the lines between urban and vintage are blurring, stirring, and being re-produced in a style that has been described as Urban Country. It’s the idea of original brick and stone walls, industrial venting systems, and rustic leather sofas. The lifestyle is all about visiting Saturday morning markets for local farmer’s veggies, but spending the night in the city enjoying hip bands, art and fine dining.

Urban Country is a little bit cowboy {cause that’s an intrinsic part of American History}, a little bit industrial {cause that’s how we got to where we are}, and very in tune with nature {cause that’s the only way we will get to wherever we are headed}.

Our family is enjoying the concept of a Urban Country lifestyle with our plans to transform a 1910 building into not only the location for the Cactus Creek Store, but for the apartment above the store to be a home for our family.  We may live in a town of 1600 people, but we are still in the heart of downtown and we enjoy the amenities of being across the street from a hardware store, cafe and our very own recycling center.  There is a farmer’s market down the street during the summer, and artists in the house every 2nd Saturday, but we can be at the farm and fishing in less than 15 minutes.
