FURNITURE we Love: Driftwood Lamps, Chandeliers, Stools, etc.

Monday, December 12th, 2011

I ran across these lamps yesterday from Bleu Nature, a craft-based business located near Lille, in Northern France. Their principal material is driftwood, but they also use pebbles, lacquered wood, lacquered metal, leather, skins and petrified wood.  Another fine example of mixing RUSTIC STYLE with industrial materials.

BEST OF CCD: {SPECTACULAR} Bristlecone Pine Log Furniture

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

This post is almost three years old {originally posted in November 2008}, but is still as stunning today as it was back then… ENJOY!!

I have been fueling my passion for RUSTIC Furniture for over 15 years, in that time I have collected hundreds of images of log furniture.
I recently came across Bristlecone Pine Company which has trumped them all!!

Bristlecone Pine BED

Owned by Dave Spiesman, a self-described one man show, Bristlecone Pine Company encompasses the raw, natural beauty of RUSTIC furniture. Bristlecone Pine TreeIn fact, the name Bristlecone Pine comes from the tree of the same name. David uses Bristlecone Pine, the oldest living thing on the planet, to create his primitive designs. He shared with me that the dead wood he uses has been dated to be 2000 to 2400 years old {think about that ~ 2000 years old, WOW}. Per David’s research the oldest living bristlecones are in California and have been dated to be 10,000 to 12,000 years old.

Bristlecone Pine LIVING ROOM FURNITURE

In addition to his Stunning BEDS, David also makes TABLES * CHAIRS * MIRRORS * LAMPS * and POOL TABLES!! All of the chairs & sofas {ABOVE} feature cushions covered with Cowhide or Buffalo Hide. I love this in an entry way or sun room ~ or two of the chairs coupled with a BIG leather sofa… LOVE IT!!

Bristlecone Pine POOL TABLE

Each of Dave’s creations is made by hand, piece by piece, with lots of heart and a PASSION for creating beautiful furniture that “flows”. To see the heart of a man all you need to see his smile… on each page of his website Dave offers a short video about his approach to design. These short videos make this artist’s passion palpable. You can also view a YouTube video of Dave HERE.

Bristlecone Pine MIRRORSo if you are interested in Bristlecone Pine’s truly GREEN furniture, pieces filled with CHARACTER and RUSTIC Grace, then you may head to either of the two stores that carry Dave’s work ~ Fortney’s Antiques in Austin, TX or Santa Fe Ranch in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. Dave also attends some shows, his biggest being the Texas Renaissance Festival in Plantersville, Texas {about an hour NW of Houston}. If you’re not in the regions of Texas or Florida then definitely give Dave a holler and he would be HONORED to make a piece for your home or office…

How to make a Bristlecone Pine Bed

Sunday, March 13th, 2011

For several years now I have admired the wild nature of
David Spiesman’s Bristlecone Furniture

Bristlecone Pine BED

He recently sent a link to some videos that he made of how he crafts a bed and I thought you might enjoy taking a look…  I can’t imagine wanting to do this myself, I’d much rather leave it to a master like David, but it is really interesting to hear him walk through his process.

How to make a Bristlecone Bed

I’ve always imagined how great it would be to have one of these beds~ like sleeping in a big tree house ~ but now that I see how organic they are, both in style and production, I’m sold for sure.  Now I just have to come up up with a space big enough to hold one…

FURNITURE DESIGNER Carlos Motta

Monday, January 31st, 2011

Carlos Motta was born to ride the surf… his life as an architect and furniture designer was born from the wood he rescued off the beaches where he played.  Thirty years of working as a craftsman in his own studio, Atelier Carlos Motta continues to build bold designs from salvaged wood, creating pieces that are both streamlined and rustic, in just the right doses.

 Atelier Carlos Motta

It is the concepts by which he lives and designs that struck my heart strings…

“Nature is generous and has offered us a lot. But our planet is tired, to say, exhausted, there is the need, the obligation of breaking the linkage between happiness and material goods.”

Atelier Carlos Motta

“Human being is a transformer. In a short space of time he changed from a simple hunter to an intellectualized individual at this time it is necessary to rethink concepts and to know that we need few to be happy.”

Atelier Carlos Motta

I’ve spent a lot of time looking at Motta’s website…his furniture is lovely and the architecture section makes me want to go sit on the edge of a deck watching the mist  and listening to mother nature… ENJOY!!

The Bristlecone Pine Guy

Monday, September 13th, 2010

A couple of years ago we met Dave Spiesman, “The Bristlecone Pine Guy”.  Dave  works with Bristlecone Pine to create one-of-a-kind furniture that will knock your socks off!!

Bristlecone Pine Vanity

Today he sent over these pictures of his most recent custom piece ~ a vanity made of maple and wrapped with Bristlecone Pine.  The drawers feature all wood guilds and the entire piece is doweled together.  This is the pinnacle of RUSTIC hand made furniture.

INSPIRATION: Native American Entry

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Native American Entry

I found this image in a stack of magazine tear outs that I have from the early 90’s.  Further proof that Rustic * Western home decor sustains the test of time.  This is a look you can have in your foyer as well… here are a few sources to get you started.

An Otto Half Chief

The Native American prints are reproductions from Charles Bird King (1785-1862).  You can buy prints, and have them framed to suit your decor, right HERE.

Chinese Water Bucket

Chinese Water Bucket from Olde Good Things. The uses for these water buckets is endless… I love the orange color of these!!
