Someday I’m going to have an entire wall {or hallway or room or whatever} dedicated completely to all the images I love…. pictures of my boys when they were born, inspirational quotes, restaurant menus, vintage concert posters, and souvenirs from vacations. Sooo, these images are great examples of COLLECTING all the ephmera that make you YOU.

My favorite part of this image is the shadow boxes filled with small groupings ~ who says the only thing you can hang on a wall is a picture?? Put an alarm clock, feather, shells, jewelry, belt buckles…. anything, into a shadow box and it becomes instant art.

Skull Chandelier… hmmmm

This weekend our tv landed on a reality show called Oddities that is currently on the Discovery Channel. It’s another spin on the craze for reality picking and junking and antiques ~ except with a creepy twist. The show follows the owners and buyers of a Manhattan store called Obscura Antiques & Oddities which specializes in “strange and extraordinary science artifacts”. For example, a small piece of art made out of human toenails. ick.

But this one caught my eye… a chandelier made out of goat skulls juxtaposed with crystals. There is something about it I like. I’m just not sure what.

The craftsman is Ian Mahr whom I can find absolutely nothing about on the www…. so I don’t know, WHAT DO YOU THINK???

Flea Market Shopping List: LAMPS

I am convinced that you can make a LAMP out of absolutely anything. It’s amazing to start exploring the options ~ the THINGS that people have used to make a lamp ~ absolutely unlimited. Whatever you love, don’t want to throw out, or want to keep forever ~ make a lamp out of it. Going to the FLEA MARKET?? Whatever you find that strikes your fancy, but you don’t know how to include it in your home decor ~ maybe you can attach a cord & halogen & voila ~ you have a light bulb moment.

Here are some ideas to get your imagination rolling before you hit the Flea Markets, Garage Sales, Auctions & Antique Stores this weekend…

NOTE: there are lots of DIY instructions on the internet for “how to make a lamp”. As for me and my time ~ it’s a project better left to the experts. Sooo… if you see something you love hit the ‘BUY NOW’ button, or contact someone who knows what they’re doing to turn your shiny object into a lighted object.

ARTIST to Know: Tamara Ruiz

Hello…. it’s a beautiful sunny day here in Weston MO!! I hope that you are having a great Friday and a fun weekend ahead…

Before I sign off for the weekend I have someone I want you to meet… Tamara Ruiz, an artist living in Blair, Nebraska. Over the years she has worked in ceramics, metalsmithing and her current medium, painting.

Ruiz has lived in the midwest her entire life ~ Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, and now Nebraska ~ which has impacted both the style and subject matter of her work.

Tamara’s art has been influenced by everythig from the geometry of the tilled fields and open prairies you find here in the Midwest, to the graphic style of old postcards and paint-by-numbers populating local garage sales. Her style often consists of strong shapes and a well-defined color palette that keep the eye wandering and looking for more… For her subject matter Tamara draws on the environment around her, places she has visited, and everyday life, but each piece always begins with the same focus ~ shape and color.

In addition to her traditional art, Tamara is also a jewelry artist ~ her designs include cowgirl charm necklaces, southwestern talismans and assemblage necklaces. Bits of vintage jewelry, beads, buttons and fabrics, charms, found objects, beach stones, fossils, gemstones, freshwater pearls, individually wire wrapped beads, hand stamped narrative tags, and hand forged links and clasps are combined to create unique, wearable works of art.

Her signature wrap necklaces come in a longer length that can be worn long, or wrapped twice for a shorter version and a slightly different look. Hand stamped mixed metal tags are featured in most of her necklaces and she is happy to work with clients to customize jewelry with a favorite phrase, family or pet name.

The Quilts of Gee’s Bend

Today I ran across the Quilts of Gee’s Bend, a collective of quilters who are all living in a small rural town in Alabama. Their history is tied to the time of slavery when their ancestors lived and worked on a plantation, after the Civil War the slaves became tenant farmers on the same plantation and all lived together forming a community that was largely removed from the modern world.

Six generations later it was discovered by the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston that the women of this community had a distinct style of quilting that has artistic qualities that have been compared to Henri Matisse and Paul Klee.

If any of the quilts look familiar it may be because several years ago retail star Anthropologie worked with The Gee’s Bend Quilters Collective to create exclusive reproductions of a select number of their designs. Other ventures have included partnerships with Kathy Ireland Worldwide {see the lamp below}, Classic Rug Collection, and the designs were even printed on US Stamps.

The story is fascinating, and the quilts themselves are a study in primitive art, color blocking and the recycling of fabrics. To learn more about The Quilts of Gee’s Bend visit the website HERE or check out the books below.
