Rustic * Western * Vintage RUG GUIDE

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Changing the RUG in a room, even if you leave it otherwise the same, can transform the entire vibe of a space, lickity split.  AND, there is nothing that feels better than coming home after a long day, taking off your shoes, and walking bare footed over a soft, clean rug.  Here are TEN of our favorites if you’re going for a Rustic * Western * Vintage look.

Patricia Wolf Fashion Show

Friday, August 13th, 2010

A few pics from designer Patricia Wolf’s recent cat walk at the Miss Rodeo Texas Fashion Show Gala…

Patricia Wolf

See more pics from the fashion show right HERE.  Do you have a favorite??

Mine is the long white dress… wearing a white dress seems like an exercise in futility for me ~ between the boys and the store it would be no time before it was covered in Cheeto dust, cat hair, and grease from some ol’ rusty something or other… but it’s fun to imagine a warm night in Mexico, on the beach, in a long white dress ~ someday that time will come again!!  That’s going to happen again someday isn’t it??

JIMT Idea: Glass Jars

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Earlier this week I was having a conversation with the boys from Junk in my Trunk Radio Show and we got to talking about JARS.  We talked about how our grandparents used to save and wash their jars to re-use for dinner scraps, about how our parents used the same jars in their garages to store nails and screws.  We talked about how, as young adults, we became horribly nonchalant and just threw jars away without re~cycling or re~using them {shameful, shameful behavior} ~ but finally we have embraced the concept of Re~LOVING and we now recycle our glass jars, or, better yet, re-use them like this…

Re-LOVED Glass Jars
Lanterns made with re-used wire hangers from
The Home in Paradise

Re-LOVED Glass Jars
Baby Food Jar Chandelier from Ulula

Re-LOVED Glass Jar Lamps
Jar Night Light from Tree Hugger

Cupcake in a Jar from Renegade Cupcake
Cupcake in a Jar from Renegade Cupcake

You can also bake cakes and pies in jars which make fantastic gifts and yummmy desserts… check out these Cakes in a Jar.

Re-LOVED Glass Jars
Recycled Jars for storing bulk foods, oatmeal, tea… plus 9 more ideas from Re-Nest.

Re-LOVED Glass Jars
DIY Mason Jar Soap Dispenser from Heather Bullard

Re-LOVED Glass Jars
Garden Lanterns from Gardner’s World

Re-LOVED Glass Jar Lids
Finger Cymbals for kiddos from MakingFriends.com

This is one of my favorites!!

Re-LOVED Glass Jars
Vintage Clear Canning Jar Chandelier from Etsy

Re-LOVED Glass Jars
Organizing nails & screws with recycled peanut butter jars from Chez Larsson.  Just like Grandpa used to have…

Re-Cycle * Re-Purpose * Re-LOVE

This idea will be featured this morning on the Junk in my Trunk Radio Show {JIMT} which airs every Monday, Thursday & Saturday from 10am till 11am on Kansas City’s 1140am KCXL & 1160am KCTO. You can also LISTEN LIVE on the Internet… visit JunkMafia.com and click on the Little Red Radio at the bottom of the page.

INSPIRATION: Tasha Polizzi’s Berkshires Home

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

I was going through some old magazines today and ran across this article that I’ve been saving for some time… I loved the pictures, the homeiness, the COLLECTIONS, the combination of Cowboy & Indians * Adirondack Camp * Classic Americana Collections & good old fashioned rustic yumminess.

Tasha Polizzi Home
{Country Living, July 2004, Photography by Steven Randazzo}

So today I started to post the images and low and behold, when I read the article, I realized that this wonderful home was that of one of our very favorite designers here at Cactus Creek, Tasha Polizzi.  Which makes total sense because, like every single other thing that Tasha Polizzi does, this house is Rustic * Western * Vintage perfection.

Tasha Polizzi Home

Tasha Polizzi Home

According to the Country Living story, many of the Native American images in the picture {ABOVE} are prints from photographer Edward S. Curtis.  I found a book of his photography a year ago and took all of the images of the Native Americans out of the book to sell them separately so that people can do with the images what they want to.  I’ve had people buy the pages to scan and print on fabric for pillows, to make cards, or to frame with their perfect mat and frame.  NOTE: I just checked on EBay & there are several Ed Curtis books for sale.  Quick, go now.

In the story Tasha talks about forming these collections over a twenty year span… it’s these great accumulations of items that make this house a home.  Taking a little piece of your adventures home, treasure by treasure, to create collections you can value for years.

Queenie’s “Pretty in Pink” TIN Hearts

Monday, August 9th, 2010

My sweet friend Lisa McQueen {aka Queenie} sent over this picture of some new pink tin hearts she has.  Each one is cut from tin ceiling tile and has the just~right amount of vintage patina.  A small crystal tied to the bottom of the heart with pretty ribbon makes these hearts the perfect gift for baby girls, mamas to be, and even homecoming which is frighteningly near…

Tin Heart

The hearts are priced at just $12 to $22 each.  Give Queenie a call to order one today!!  812-236-5911  OR shoot her an email:  lisa@queenietin.com  OR visit her website HERE.

SHOP GIRLS {week 32.10}… LISTS, volunteering & other rambling thoughts about last weekend.

Monday, August 9th, 2010

This summer has blown by ~ like it always does ~ and especially the last few weeks when I’ve become completely overwhelmed with projects and tasks.  As a girl with a entrepreneurial spirit it’s easy to YES to new projects with the hope of great opportunity.  As a girl with a thin wallet, it’s hard to take on so much without the ability to hire much help.  Whenever I begin to feel inundated I find that the best way to re-focus is with a LIST.  I come by this honestly as my Mom is a tenacious list maker; and, even in the last days before losing his battle to colon cancer, my sweet Daddy was making lists of things we needed to do when he was gone.

I actually start off every day with a LIST of things to do and it is always waaaay more than I can accomplish.  As the day progresses I cross off the things I’ve completed and re-prioritize.  By the end of the day I’ve usually gotten a fair amount of work done and have made a new list for the next morning.  It’s a system that works for me.  The lists help me to #1 ~ FOCUS ON WHAT IS IMPORTANT, #2 ~ STAY ON TASK , and #3 ~ PRIORITIZE BASED ON MY GOALS

Last week I was feeling even more swamped than normal when I took on inventory in the store the same week as the Weston 10 Mile Trail Antique, Art & Garden Show.  I’m not sure what I was thinking other than the fact that there is always some excuse notdo inventory, and, as I admitted last week, I’ve been procrastinating for, well… let’s just say a while now.  Regarding the 10 Mile Trail, by the end of the week I got to the point that I was saying to myself “WHY, exactly, are you doing this???”  My husband tuned in with the same question and a valid point, “if you’re not benefiting financially from this then you should quit.”

So I got to thinking, why AM I doing this??

Weston 10 Mile Trail Antique, Art & Garden Show

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

My whole world is centered right now on the Weston 10 Mile Trail Antique, Art & Garden Show which happens next Friday & Saturday, August 6th & 7th, 2010, here in our little town of Weston, Missouri.  It’s the third year for the event and we’re working our tails off to make sure that there are quality vendors and TONS of people in town.

Weston 10 Mile Trail Antique Art & Garden Show

The event takes place on what is normally the hottest weekend of the year but we planned it that way on purpose.  Well, we planned it in August for a purpose, we always hope for the occasional cooler-than-normal-temperatures.  August because our little town needed a boost in this normally slow month.  We have found that people usually don’t make the drive over to Weston this late in the summer because it’s too hot, they’re on last minute vacations, and getting ready for back to school.  We say it’s too hot to work in the yard or go to the pool, so go for a drive, take a stay-cation here in Weston & stock up on your school wardrobe with our fantastic clothing stores!!

Weston 10 Mile Trail Antique Art & Garden Show

Next weekend’s 10 Mile Trail Antique, Art & Garden Show will take place at four different locations over a 10 mile trail in and around our beautiful little Weston.  We will have antique dealers out at RED BARN FARM, more antiques at LOCUST GROVE and BEVERLIN’s STATUARY.  Then at the RIVERWOOD WINERY location there will be a great mix of artists.  There will be entertainment and great food and drinks at each location on Friday night till 7pm.

Weston 10 Mile Trail Antique Art & Garden Show

And then there is always shopping, eating & drinking on Main Street, all day every day… Weston is about the best place on earth I tell you.  It’s one of little towns where you can visit a winery, eat a five star meal, have ice cream at the local soda fountain, shop a hardware store that still has items stocked in the 1940’s, find quality furniture, antiques and gorgeous clothes, and spend the night in a hotel from the 1800’s ~ all on Main Street.  {And I haven’t even mentioned our infamous pub & brewery in town.}

Weston 10 Mile Trail Antique Art & Garden Show

Soooo, if you are anywhere even close to Weston MO I highly recommend that you put next Friday & Saturday on the calendar to be here.  I’m so excited about the event that I’ve decided to throw a party to celebrate… next Friday night {Aug 6, 2010} at the Cactus Creek Store from 7pm till 9pm.  There will be tamales & beer & good times for all.  Hope you join us!!
