COWPOKES & CAMP FIRE GIRLS ~ Series Part IV: Barn Dandy’s Founder, Polly Wilson INTERVIEW

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Decorating for Cowpokes & Camp Fire Girls

Starting in a barn on her family’s cattle ranch in Colorado, Polly began Barn Dandy’s by searching high and low for vintage fabrics to complete the children’s furniture & accessories that she sold to area stores.  One chance meeting after another, and in time Barn Dandy’s became Polly’s full time passion ~ and job.

Barn Dandy's Jack and Jill FabricWith the slow disappearance of the treasured textiles of our past, Polly began to design her own fabrics.  Now based in Oklahoma, Barn Dandy’s has become an industry-leading business that sets the standard for vintage prints and children’s designs.  Polly sells her wares through her own website, as well as through retailers around the country.

Where does Polly get her inspiration??  Barn Dandy's Western States FabricSometimes it’s out of necessity, and sometimesBarn Dandy's Sleeping Bag it’s a striking thought that wakes her in the night.  Polly does make sure to explain that she doesn’t draw on paper, or on the computer ~ instead her process is cutting & pasting, tearing out images, finding objects with inspirational colors ~ then forwarding all of these materials to the “computer pros” to move forward on the mechanical process of translating Polly’s inspirations into legendary fabrics. Inspired by vintage patterns and ephemera, Polly then creates Barn Dandy’s products based on the fabrics she has designed.

Barn Dandy's Geronimo FabricWhen Polly dreams of new fabrics and products she imagines them fitting into a life of kiddos who experience the raw joy of childhood.  That is what Barn Dandy’s is all about ~ the innocence and wonder of childhood ~ the joy of getting dirty on the FARM * spending the night outside in a TENT * playing hide & seekand eating CHOCOLATE sundaes Barn Dandy's Cowboys & Inidans PINK Fabricfor dinner.

What is currently affecting Polly’s designs??  The unyielding trend toward MODERN, refined decor.  Even for those of us who LOVE Rustic * Western home design, the trend to SIMPLIFY with clean lines and neutral palettes is impacting design for the early 21st century.  The current spin on the ‘Modern Barn Dandy's Camping Scene FabricFarmhouse’, as well as Pottery Barn’s influence on the thirty-something generation, most young parents are now led to admire simple designs and clean palettes.  While these criteria are a deviation from the bright & quirky vintage designs, finding a ‘happy-medium’ has not only challenged Polly’s creative efforts, it has led her to two new fabric designs that will once again set Barn Dandy’s apart from their peers.

Barn Dand's Diner Tray
What can we look for from Barn Dandy’s  in the next few months??  In addition to the two new fabrics that Polly has designed {they will hopefully launch in January}, there is also a line of pet products that is getting ready to premiere.  Like farm escapades and watching falling stars, cats & dogs are another requisite for childhood joy.  Who better to give our pets quality goods with vintage charm??  Barn Dandy’s, of course!!
{I think Santa is bringing us a puppy so you can be sure that I’ll follow up on this one… }

Thanks so much Polly ~ I am honored.  Y’all have a fab weekend…
I’m off to a birthday party!!  xoxo, Fancy

Yesterday we started our ‘Cowpokes & Camp Fire Girls’ Series uncovering all the things we LOVE for designing a kiddo’s room.  Today is all about Furniture & Bedding ~ in an effort to keep focused I am excluding baby stuff…  we’ll save that for another time.  Enjoy today’s Furniture & Bedding ideas!!

PENDLETON Blankets & Home Goods
You can never go wrong with Pendleton Blankets. As a family-owned operation that has been in business for over 140 years, weaving their woolens in their Mills in Oregon and Washington State, the Pendleton brand typifies Western STYLE and Native American DESIGN. I particularly love this Round Up Blanket which looks great mixed with plaids & ticking in a Cowpoke room!!

POTTERY BARN
The decorating standard for American thirty-somethings, Pottery Barn offers rich colors, innovative designs, and reliable style.  PB’s Rustic Cowboy Bedroom is particularly fabulous… I wrote all about it in July, but it is just too perfect {for little ones and teens alike} to not post again!!  BTW, if you would like to re-create this room then check out the wallpaper HERE for achieving a perfect rustic look on your walls…

COWPOKES & CAMP FIRE GIRLS ~ SERIES Part I: ART

Monday, November 10th, 2008

As a Mom I have had the pleasure of decorating and re-decorating several rooms in order to accommodate the birth of three kids in a four year period.  This week my No. 2 baby, Gunner, is turning three years old!!  So ~ in honor of Gunner ~ I have decided to spend this week tracking down some fabulous decoration ideas for your Cowpokes and Camp Fire girls

LARRY STEPHENSON
Known for his light-hearted approach to the toys and objects of childhood, Larry Stephenson’s TOYZ art work is a
nostaligic way to set the tone of your little one’s bunkhouse.

Larry Stepheson's OUT WEST

PAM BLACK WAGNER
With earthy colors and a fantastical approach to her subjects, the paintings of Pam Black Wagner offer a long term solution to art in a child’s room.  My favorite in the collection on Wagner’s website, ‘a friend in need’, is below.  Wouldn’t this rich painting be equally beautiful above an iron crib, log bed or vintage dresser??  All of Wagner’s paintings offer this same robust point of view making them the perfect fit for moving from the nursery, to the tween’s room, to the family room.

LANTERN PRESS from Art.com
Lantern Press supplies art work to museums, lodges, national parks and more.  Using vintage materials to inspire the images in their 1 million + collection, Lantern Press sells to the trade only.  Fortunately they offer most of their products at Art.com.  Even better, most of the images come in several sizes.  I love this look for creating a lodge feel ~ perfect for your Boy Scout {or Camp-Fire Girl}!!

AARON FOSTER DESIGNS
Without question Aaron Foster’s license plate art has become an icon of the “junk revolution” of the 21st Century.  Known originally for his popular License Plate MAPS, Foster also offers FLOWERS, COWBOYS, hip PEACE SIGNS and much, much moreThese works are an investment in an artist who will be a symbol of Americana and Found Art for years to come…
