I was sooo excited yesterday when Monita {my everything at the store} showed me one of the latest posts from the blog SF Girl by Bay and Cactus Creek was mentioned!!  I adore the SF Girl blog which is edited by Victoria Smith.  Her eye for clean lines, bohemian style, and surprising details is great fun to read, swoon, and wait for what comes next…

When she bought this pink Camp Blanket {above} a couple of months ago I was over the moon… it was like a big ol’ pat on the back from someone who has epic taste.  To see what she did with the blanket, taking something with so much history, color, and campy style, and pairing it with a simple bench and elegant mantle, was a juxtaposition I could never have come up with but Lordy, I LOVE IT!!!

Stacy Downs from the KC Star called a few weeks ago to see if we would be interested in being a part of this Sofa Story.  Um, yes… of course we are interested.  They picked six designers in Kansas City to decorate a white sofa with pillows ~ just pillows ~ I was thrilled to be included.  My only question was what style were they looking for??  We always describe Cactus Creek {the store and the website} as Rustic * Western * Vintage.  So I wanted to deliver… Rustic, Western or Vintage???  Stacy said “just your style, whatever you would do in your store”. 

Then my husband asked me… “if you could do any pillows what would they be??”  Well, I had just returned from Texas and was about to head to Des Moines for Junk Jubilee.  I had no time, and I had spent a wad of money, so I also had no money.  “In a dream world I would have cowhide pillows, turkish rug pillows, and {even though I’d never seen any in person} pillows made from old quilts.  That would be my dream pillows… if I had time. or money.”

I knew I’d come up with something, ’cause I can always come up with something, and then that weekend at Junk Jubilee I’ll be darned if I didn’t find the PERFECT crazy quilt pillows.  They are gorgeous… made from rugged old quilts that had been filled with holes, but the gal who rescued them couldn’t bear to throw them away.  So she cut them up and gave them a beautiful new life… 

Each pillow is hand cut and sewn, they are embellished with embroidery, vintage buttons and fanciful trims.  Each crazy quilt pillow is one-0f-a-kind and full of character… and they are all for sale at the Cactus Creek STORE.  Want one??  all you have to do is give us a shout… 816.386.4013.

We caught up with Fancy at her vintage outpost in Weston to find out her top picks for maintaining her personal style.

1. BOOTS My Texas roots keep me in my boots. The vintage sort are best — broken in and full of character.

2. JEANS When you live in a small town, things are casual, and jeans are acceptable just about anywhere.

3. LAYERS Four seasons means the weather can change in an instant, so I’m usually layered in a tank top, T-shirt, vintage pearl snap, and a cozy Navajo-style sweater.

Last night I was wearing a RL Navajo sweater that I bough on sale for $150 over 12 years ago & someone asked me where I got because she “just had to have one”… it was a lot of money at the time but hot damn, that’s a good investment.

4. HAT Always a hat just in case the wind gets too wild. Sometimes a cowboy hat, sometimes a ball cap, or even a stocking cap for cold days.

5. JEWELRY I love it all and can never decide what to wear, so I usually pile on three or four necklaces at a time.

6. BANDANNA Usually there are a few bandannas in my bag for wiping up after my boys, wrapping around my neck in place of a scarf, or tying back my hair.

7. JUNKIN’ BAG Always in my car is my “junkin’ bag,” a tooled leather backpack with a coin purse and a little cash, a tape measure, gloves, and hand sterilizer — ’cause you never know when you might find a good sale and a big treasure.

8. CAMERA AND LAPTOPI never leave home without either one. I spend a lot of time updating my blog, CactusCreekDaily.com, so a camera and laptop are two essentials.

9. BLANKETS Serapes, buffalo plaid, Indian blankets — I’ve always got blankets piled in the car for spontaneous picnics, to wrap around treasures found on the side of the road, or for getting cozy at a Friday night football game.

10. iPHONEFrom red-dirt country to classics like Johnny Cash, we have music playing 24/7 in our home, at the store, or via my iPhone in my back pocket. Right now, favorites include the Casey Donahew Band, the Bleu Edmondson Band, and, of course, Cross Canadian Ragweed and Cory Morrow, who we love!

We have lived in Weston MO for almost eight years now and it’s just about the best place on earth.  As a native Texan it’s hard to say that about any place north of Wichita Falls, but the rich rolling hills, the amazing community spirit, the close proximity to downtown Kansas City, plus the swell of tourists that come here on the weekends, give Weston MO a rich texture that cannot be duplicated.  But mostly, it’s HOME. 

I am so honored and pleased that Cowboys & Indians Magazine chose to include Weston MO and Cactus Creek in their premiere magazine.  BIG THANKS just isn’t enough…

Nestled in rolling hills, Weston MO is a tiny town {only 1600 people} that thrives on a hard day’s work and the tourists that enjoy our little shops, b&b’s and pubs.  It’s a charming place to visit for a day, even more charming to raise a family here.  We really cannot imagine ever living anywhere but Weston, MO.

With that I am so excited to share that today, Friday, September 4th, 2009, Weston MO is starting a little radio show.  It was one of those ideas that has gone from a lightbulb moment two weeks ago to an entire radio show that starts today!!  I am so, so proud to be the first guest on the Weston MO Radio Show, along with my good friend Steve Frey who owns a charming educational farm here in Weston, Red Barn Farm.

So please listen in this morning as we get this new venture off the ground… all you have to do is click the logo ABOVE & listen to the ONLINE STREAM!!  I will be talking all about the next Cactus Creek Store Event Sept 11 thru Sept 13 which will feature artists Dolan Geiman and Rhett Johnson.
