Americana Hooked Rugs & Pillows

I spent yesterday with a great friend and talented businesswoman, Jan Orr Harter from Hot Tamale Antiques in Ft. Worth, Texas. Jan has specialized in Western and Americana antiques for years and it was a great opportunity to shop/junk with her all day with her and see things with a fresh perspective. We stumbled on a gorgeous hooked rug that she encouraged me to buy ~ it really is a beautiful example of Americana Folk Art, all hand hooked with mid-century fabrics. And I love the way that it looks in the store!!

Later last night I was thumbing through an old Country Living Magazine from 2005 and ran across a blurb about HookedonVermont.com… check out their beautiful pillows and rugs…

I’ve seen hooked rugs and pillows for years and normally pass them up without a second thought. I’m excited to have this fresh idea for our store and the house ~ it feels good to bring a little color into the mix of neutrals!!

BIG Gypsy-fied Floor Stencils

The other day I received an email asking for some input on painting a floor with large stencils that would give a room a gypsy-fied feeling ~ “loads of distressin, bold colors, old world, vintage, western, rustic, eclectic…. romantic with rough around its edges…. browns with purples and turquoise… an ageless appeal of something that has been there for years… added to over and over again.” It SOUNDS AMAZING & I can picture it in my head… here’s what I’ve come up with so far….

First of all, some images that give me that warm, gypsy, vintage feeling deep in my design soul… many of the links below the images include DIY directions.

I am dying to see someone else finish a project like this… I’m not a DIY kind of girl but it seems like painting the floor a solid color, then distressing the hell out of it, then painting it again with more distressing, then adding the stencils would be a big first step for that layered look. Maybe even doing the same thing with the stencils… paint, sand, blast, paint some more… Lordy, I just don’t know. Any experts out there that can chime in here??

I mentioned painting the floors in the apartment to my husb and he was less than impressed. {Not that that would stop me.} Something to dwell on for a while anyway… Good luck with your project!! SEND PICTURES!!!!!!!!!

INSPIRATION: Rustic Cottage Living Room

So did you get it done?? All of the Christmas decorations down… put all of the presents away… cleaned the house real good… Yeah, me neither. But when I do {next weekend I swear!!} it’s going to feel sooo good to start fresh. I love how “uncluttered” the living room feels after that tree comes down, I always forget that along with the warmth & coziness of Christmas decor comes a lot of “stuff”. It’s then that I start to feel INSPIRED to do something new to the house. A new wall hanging, maybe… or even just a few new pillows to freshen up the look of the living room.

I LOVE the living room {BELOW}, mostly because it is full of all of the things that the homeowner loves ~ souvenirs from travels, a comfortable sofa and the perfect antique chairs.

This fall has gotten off to a blah start hasn’t it?? The news is depressing, everyone is sick, and here in Weston MO it’s cold. We can all sit around and whine, whine, whine but that’s annoying so let’s stop now ~ brush off the blues ~ and figure out what to do to turn around the doldrums.

Round Knit Star Pillow

The trend for hand made items just keeps getting bigger, doesn’t it?? Interesting how our economy has affected so many lives and people’s dreams are almost getting BIGGER due to the bleakness. It’s inspiring, really… folks lose their “real jobs” and their only option is to follow their heart’s desires. The result is a marketplace full of talented artists who create items both wildly original, and also some that are a throw back to the crafts grandma taught us. The trend is so significant that it is now completely mainstream and modern to sport hand crafted items.
Even Urban Outiftters is doing it… I love that.

Faux Flowers
I know every designer reading this is cringing in horror and the mere mention of faux flowers. Sorry folk, refer to the paragraph above regarding the economy… a girls gotta’ do what a girls gotta do to keep on smiling. If fake flowers do it for you then don’t be ashamed!!
