BEST OF CCD: {SPECTACULAR} Bristlecone Pine Log Furniture

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

This post is almost three years old {originally posted in November 2008}, but is still as stunning today as it was back then… ENJOY!!

I have been fueling my passion for RUSTIC Furniture for over 15 years, in that time I have collected hundreds of images of log furniture.
I recently came across Bristlecone Pine Company which has trumped them all!!

Bristlecone Pine BED

Owned by Dave Spiesman, a self-described one man show, Bristlecone Pine Company encompasses the raw, natural beauty of RUSTIC furniture. Bristlecone Pine TreeIn fact, the name Bristlecone Pine comes from the tree of the same name. David uses Bristlecone Pine, the oldest living thing on the planet, to create his primitive designs. He shared with me that the dead wood he uses has been dated to be 2000 to 2400 years old {think about that ~ 2000 years old, WOW}. Per David’s research the oldest living bristlecones are in California and have been dated to be 10,000 to 12,000 years old.

Bristlecone Pine LIVING ROOM FURNITURE

In addition to his Stunning BEDS, David also makes TABLES * CHAIRS * MIRRORS * LAMPS * and POOL TABLES!! All of the chairs & sofas {ABOVE} feature cushions covered with Cowhide or Buffalo Hide. I love this in an entry way or sun room ~ or two of the chairs coupled with a BIG leather sofa… LOVE IT!!

Bristlecone Pine POOL TABLE

Each of Dave’s creations is made by hand, piece by piece, with lots of heart and a PASSION for creating beautiful furniture that “flows”. To see the heart of a man all you need to see his smile… on each page of his website Dave offers a short video about his approach to design. These short videos make this artist’s passion palpable. You can also view a YouTube video of Dave HERE.

Bristlecone Pine MIRRORSo if you are interested in Bristlecone Pine’s truly GREEN furniture, pieces filled with CHARACTER and RUSTIC Grace, then you may head to either of the two stores that carry Dave’s work ~ Fortney’s Antiques in Austin, TX or Santa Fe Ranch in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. Dave also attends some shows, his biggest being the Texas Renaissance Festival in Plantersville, Texas {about an hour NW of Houston}. If you’re not in the regions of Texas or Florida then definitely give Dave a holler and he would be HONORED to make a piece for your home or office…

A Cowboy Room Designed for the Years Ahead

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

One of my favorite clients, “Family H”, is expecting their second bambino which means we’ve been working on a ‘Big Boy’ room for their older son. The H’s are a sophisticated family who are all about every day style with a little yee-haw punch. The ‘Big Boy’ is only two years old but we are styling a room for the lenghth of his childhood. No Pooh Bear here – it’s going to be all about investing in his future. Here are some of the big ideas for a little cowpoke’s room…

  • We started with the BED

 Queen Twig Log Bed

Twig Log Bed – This striking bed from BlackForestDecor.com (BTW – Free shipping for all orders over $89. Use Coupon Code CJ56 when ordering) may seem grand for a little guy but remember – they only want to do this once and a race car bed is just not an option.  Another consideration was that the room will occasionally be used for guests…

  • Paint SampleFor the rest of the FURNITURE we looked for something that was not too ‘matchey-matchey’.  I love to combine painted rustic furniture with log furniture so here are the nightstands and dresser we chose from LaFuenteImports.com’s  Southwest Collection along with the color sample that will be used to paint the furniture.  Southwest Furniture Collection

  • For BEDDING we went with the basics… Neutral Comforter & Sheets (below from Target) + Camp Blanket (below from Pendleton) + custom Bedskirt & Shams (in a rust red cuordoroy maybe).

Brown Comforter

Woolrich Chocolate Alternative Down Comforter and Tan Bamboo Seets from Target.
Tan Sheets

Pendleton
Cherokee Basket Blanket from Pendleton-USA.com.

Rust Swatch
Swatch of fabric fromFabric.com
to represent the custom bedskirt & shams we’ll have made in this rust color.

Wild West Sheets
Just for kicks here are some fun sheets from TheCompanyStore.com.  These should keep things from getting too serious!!

  • For WALL ART we turned to one of my favorites – Art.com.  My favorite look for a large wall next to the bed were these Buffalo Bill images. Buffalo Bill Art

These prints complimented one another – they are large and also classic cowboy images. Above they are pictured with red mats and frames – they can also be printed on canvas (pictured below).

Dude Ranch SignHere is another idea for filling some wall space… This sign can be custom ordered with any name. There are others to choose from HERE.

  • Finally we needed a new solution for the CEILING LIGHT.  I’m sure that NATE BERKUSwould be aghast but I encouraged the family to go with a fan – sometimes you have to choose practicality over ‘decorating rules’. I love this fan from FantasticFans.com – it is the John Timberland Seville fan. FantasticFans.com has a good, comprehensive selection of Rustic ceiling fans…

‘Juniper Twists’ Furniture

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

Bruce “the Juniper Guy” sent me an email this week with STUNNING pictures of his ‘Juniper Twists’ Furniture.  A piece of art in itself, the Western Juniper used to create the furniture is typically found in high, desert mountain regions.  Bruce salvages each piece of juniper on his own, then crafts fabulous forms for the home….

Juniper Bench  Juniper Mantle

Juniper Bed

All of the Juniper Beds on Bruce’s website (click HERE) are so stunning – this one reminded me of a childhood fairy tale.  What a joy it would be to wake up here every morning!!

Raw Juniper for Building

In addition to fanciful furniture Bruce also offers his Juniper in the raw to be used as architectural elements for builders (think columns, stairwells, etc.) -
OR you guys (and gals) who like to Do-It-Yourself can also purchase raw Juniper and try your hand at some furniture building (send us pics!!)

p.s. here is some recommended reading for those of you interested in furniture building…

Round Top (Spring 08) Day 2: Rustic Art Gallery

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

Warrenton, TexasNext stop: Warrenton, Texas.  Warrenton is just a couple miles south of Round Top and the home of Zapp Hall (more on that later!!).  It is here that there are fields and fields of dealers set up to sell their vintage goods – literally as far as the eye could see…  way more than our afternoon hunt would allow for.  But, there were definitely some Rustic*Western*Vintage goodies we couldn’t resist.

The first booth to really catch my eye in Warrenton was the Rustic Art Gallery owned by Patrick Watson.  His beautiful furniture (the beds are to die for!!) can be custom ordered, as well as his mantels and porch posts.  Love it!!  Click on “Read More” to see a few more pics…
